The second-seeded Torrington softball team (18-2), winners of the Naugatuck Valley League's Copper Division, never got the chance to get their NVL Tournament quarterfinal against No. 7 Wolcott (11-8) started on Monday afternoon at a soggy Woodland Regional High School (picture at right). The first game of the day, Woodland-Ansonia, was suspended in the bottom of the fourth with the Hawks ahead 12-6 and up to bat, according to the Waterbury Republican-American. The Hawks are the No. 3 seed in the tournament while the Chargers are No. 6.
The rains came, and the Lady Raiders went home without playing a single out. I passed Wolcott softball's bus on Route 8 South on the way to Woodland, but never saw the bus again.
Torrington and Wolcott try to play again tomorrow at approximately 5 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Woodland-Ansonia game, according to an e-mail sent by THS Athletic Director Janet Giampaolo.
According to Giampaolo's e-mail, the semifinals would be on Wednesday, starting at 5 p.m. The second game would be 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
Torrington baseball (11-9, NVL Copper champs) also never got a chance to play. According to head coach Pat Richardson, the Raiders got to the Naugatuck High School parking lot, then immeditately turned around and headed home. No. 8 Torrington and No. 1 Derby (17-3) look to get their game going tomorrow at approximately 5 p.m. or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Seymour-Ansonia game. No. 7 Seymour and No. 2 Ansonia will start at 3:30 at Naugatuck High School. The Wildcats lead the Chargers 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
I will be covering the softball game. Look for a live blog on The Register Citizen web site's main sports page. If you are not near a computer, you can get live updates via Twitter @kroberts023.
Peter Wallace is scheduled to cover the baseball game.
